AN ECONOMETRIC ANALYSIS OF DEMAND FOR MEAT AND FISH PRODUCTS IN KOREA AgEcon
Jung, Jione; Koo, Won W..
This study analyzes the structure of Korean meat and fish product demand. The Linear Approximate Almost Ideal Demand System (LA/AIDS) is used to estimate Korean meat and fish demand. Since the expenditure term is endogenous, the three-stage least squares (3SLS) estimator is used to estimate the demand system. Empirical results indicate that beef imports would increase with increases in per capita income. If imported beef becomes less expensive as a result of the trade liberalization policy adopted by the Korean government, Hanwoo beef would not be competitive and could lose its market share. Pork and chicken would be able to maintain market shares, but most fish products would lose market shares.

An econometric analysis of the competitive position of Australian cotton in the Japanese market AgEcon
Chang, Hui-Shung (Christie).
Although a relatively small producer, Australia exports but about 90% of its cotton production, making it the third largest cotton exporter. This means that export performance plays a major role in determining the profitability of the Australian cotton industry. The primary aim was to determine the competitive position of Australian cotton in the Japanese market, based on the AIDS model using data from 1972 to 1998. The main findings were that the United States had a relatively strong market position and that to improve its market position, Australia should become more cost competitive and/or improve its quality image through promotion.

DEMAND FOR ORGANIC AND CONVENTIONAL BEVERAGE MILK AgEcon
Glaser, Lewrene K.; Thompson, Gary D..
Sales of organic milk in mainstream supermarkets have grown over the last 8 years, reaching $75.7 million in 1999, as more organic milk processors enter the market and more mainstream supermarkets sell organic products. National-level scanner data for mainstream supermarkets are employed to assess market shares and price premiums, as well as to estimate key demand elasticities. Container size is important in analyzing market shares for organics. Half-gallon containers are the principle organic market with volume shares ranging from 1.6% to 2.8% in 1999. Market shares for quarts and gallons of organic milk are considerably below 0.5%. Price premiums for organic milk averaged 60% of branded prices and 75% of private-label prices during the study period...

DEMAND FOR ORGANIC AND CONVENTIONAL FROZEN VEGETABLES AgEcon
Glaser, Lewrene K.; Thompson, Gary D..
In this paper, we examine retail sales of organic and conventional frozen vegetables (broccoli, green beans, green peas, and sweet corn) using supermarket scanner data. Descriptive analysis includes comparisons of sales volume, prices, and market shares. Price and expenditure elasticities are estimated using the almost ideal demands system (AIDS).

Differentiated Demand and Supply of Wheat under Alternative European Trade Policies AgEcon
Frahan, Bruno Henry de; Tritten, Christian.
This paper proposes a partial equilibrium displacement model that differentiates wheat according to its end-use and country of origin to investigate the impact of alternative European trade policies on wheat supply and demand in France. Transmission, demand and supply elasticities are estimated for each class and origin of wheat. Simulation results show that rebalancing trade protection across wheat classes encourages domestic supply of high quality wheat and displaces imports from North America.

Source Differentiated Mexican Dairy Import Demand AgEcon
Ramirez, Miguel A.; Wolf, Christopher A..
Mexico is a major destination of dairy exports and is the single largest importer of US dairy exports. We use a restricted source almost ideal demand system to estimate the demand for dairy products imported into Mexico. The estimation facilitates an examination of the demand for dairy imports and the results have implications for exporting firms and countries. Our estimates indicate fierce competition for the Mexican market between the US, Oceania, and “other countries” primarily from South America.

The Almost Ideal Demand System Approximation and Separability AgEcon
Brown, Mark G.; Lee, Jonq-Ying.
The paper focuses on separability in the almost ideal demand system (AIDS) in time series analysis. The AIDS approximation based on Stone's price index is specified in terms of the Rotterdam model and block additivity is imposed for illustrative purposes. A generalization to other types of separability is then considered. The model can be viewed as an extension to Theil et al.'s Working-PI time series model. In both the Theil et al. model and the AIDS model examined here, the marginal propensity to spend on a good is allowed to depend on the good's budget share. In the model in this paper, the Slutsky coefficients are further allowed to depend on the budget shares. The model provides a consistent way to analyze subgroup demand relationships.

The Demand for Beef in Indonesia: Implications for Australian Agribusiness AgEcon
Doran, Howard E.; O'Donnell, Christopher J.; Griffith, Garry R.; Chang, Hui-Shung (Christie); Hutasuhut, Maradoli.
Meat consumption and socio-demographic data from the 1990, 1993 and 1996 SUSENAS Household Food Expenditure and Consumption Surveys were employed to estimate the demand for meats in Indonesia. The focus was on the Provinces of DKI Jakarta and West Java where about one-fourth of the Indonesian population reside. Statistical and econometric procedures were used to aggregate the 16 meat types recorded in the SUSENAS into four Meat Groups. They were then used to estimate the Linear Approximation of the Almost Ideal Demand System (LA/AIDS) model, taking into account zero observations and the restrictions on budget shares. The demand for Meat Group 1 (with the dominant meat, beef) is income-inelastic, whereas for Meat Group 2 (with the dominant meat,...
